The very first Akehurst Family History Society Get together was held on 28th June 1998 at Hailsham, Sussex.
The object of this meeting was for members to meet for the first time face to face and exchange their research and ideas. We also considered various means of communicating with other researchers, together with a demonstration of Genealogy Resources on the Internet. This was to include a visit to the various Akehurst Internet Sites.
We exchange information on all facets of our research e.g. family tree programs, compiled databases. The idea was to bring along photocopies of family trees and copies of other research material to swap with fellow researchers.
Researchers also had the chance to make enquiries about their own specific areas of interest.
A general discussion by members helped to determine the overall goals required by researchers e.g. One Name Study approach, the future of the “AKEHURST-ER" Newsletter and the formation of an Akehurst Family Society to cater for the variant spellings that occur. Invitations had been sent out to all known researchers in the United Kingdom, United States of America, Australia and New Zealand.
Non-UK researchers included David Murdock from the USA, Liz Rushton, David Evans and Colin Ackehurst from Australia.
